Romanian Inmate Hacks Prison System

The Romanian National Penitentiary Administration (ANP) has been the target of a major cyberattack orchestrated by an inmate. According to the National Union of Prison Police Officers (SNPP), the breach was discovered a month ago but has only now been made public. The inmate, held at the Târgu Jiu prison in southern Romania, gained access to the IT system and modified the execution of sentences, detention conditions, and the rights of fifteen other inmates in other prisons. The SNPP's timeline shows the inmate logged into the system for over 300 hours, during which he altered sentences, prison rights, visiting schedules, and monetary deposits in accounts used for purchases. This fraudulent activity allowed 15 inmates to benefit through sentence reductions, purchases, financial adjustments, and modified appeal days. After being transferred, he logged into the system as an official using credentials from a prison hospital employee, enabling him to make purchases without deducting funds from his account. An investigation is currently underway to uncover the full extent of the incident and hold all responsible parties accountable. Justice Minister Radu Marinescu confirmed that an investigation is in progress, stating that the ANP has taken immediate action.
